Questions about learning German by reading
Who is this German reader for?
It’s for learners who want focused German reading practice, especially if you know some vocabulary but find longer texts overwhelming. It’s a reading companion, not a complete German course.
Can I use it as a complete beginner?
Start with short sentences. If German is entirely new to you, learning some basic vocabulary and grammar alongside reading will help. The reading estimates are provisional, not a validated CEFR assessment.
How does the difficulty adapt to me?
Mark the words you don’t know, then choose “Too easy”, “Perfect” or “Too hard” to continue. The reader uses your explicit ratings to estimate your reading level and choose suitable sentences. The aim is mostly familiar language with a little room to learn.
How do I get a translation?
Tap a word in the German sentence to see its meaning in context in your selected website language. For a translation of the whole sentence, choose “Translate sentence”. AI translations can sometimes be mistaken.
Does this replace speaking or listening practice?
Reading does not replace speaking or listening practice, but in our experience, reading at a level you can understand through comprehensible input is the most valuable thing you can do to learn German. We recommend combining it with listening and speaking to practise those skills too.
Can I try it now?
Yes. You can try the German reader for free and start practising directly on this page.
Less overwhelm. More time with German.
