A few useful answers

What your reading estimate means.

Can this determine my official German CEFR level?

No. It provides an approximate, provisional reading estimate for choosing practice material. The placement algorithm and AI sentence grades have not been validated as a CEFR assessment. Use a recognised assessment if you need evidence for work, study or a certificate.

What do A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 mean?

These are the six broad CEFR proficiency levels, from beginner A1 to highly proficient C2. Reading is only one skill within that framework. The current German sentence bank has AI-labelled material from A1 to C1, but no C2-labelled material; an estimate above the sampled range is not evidence of C2 ability.

How is my German reading level estimated?

The reader compares your saved ratings with the estimated difficulty of each scored sentence. “Too easy” asks for harder sentences, “Perfect” leaves your level unchanged, and “Too hard” asks for easier sentences. Word marks do not affect placement. It adapts practice rather than running a fixed exam.

How many sentences do I need for a reliable result?

There is no validated sentence count or guaranteed accuracy. The first 10 sentences let you try the reader, not complete a certified assessment. Treat early estimates cautiously, especially if the material has not yet reached your level.

Should I use translations during the reading check?

For a more useful practice estimate, judge your understanding of the German before revealing a full translation. You can use reading help, but still mark words you did not know and rate the sentence based on what you understood without that help.

Can I keep practising after checking my level?

Yes. The same reader continues adapting as you practise, and your German progress is shared across these pages. Try 10 sentences without an account, then register and subscribe for £2 per month to continue.
